An Evening of Art and Performance in
THE BASEMENT AT THE EXCHANGE

You can view the event by clicking here

Sunday 28th September (free, but booking essential).

For one night only, The Exchange will open the underground space of its basement for an evening of cross-disciplinary art and performance as part of a nation wide project ‘Out Of Bounds’, involving Tate Modern, ICA, Fact, Cornerhouse and Wysing Arts Centre.
Beneath The Exchange’s minimalist design and striking glass facade sits the building’s original and untouched Victorian basement. A warren of brick rooms holds the detritus and marks of the old telephone exchange. Fixtures and equipment that once ruled the building now lie dormant.

This evening event will premier new work made by regional artists responding to the basement and notions of subterranean poetics of space. Out of gallery hours and below the public’s view, the event will embrace being out of bounds: the remnants of a surveillance station, an elevator to nowhere, a sonic journey into the underworld, a view into an underwater city and the guise of a secret society. Drawings of broken minds and paintings of last words will be hung alongside photographs of abandonment. . . And there will be a speakeasy cellar bar!

Sarah Bunker, Paul Carter & Alexandra Zierle, Andy Currie,
Steven Hawkes, Georgina Hounsome, Delpha Hudson,
Bryony Gillard, Kirsty Lowry, Seamus Moran,
Steven Paige, Alison Sharkey, Rupert White, Veronica Vickery. . .

The event is free but the number of guests is strictly limited and booking is essential, so please contact Bryony Gillard at The Exchange on 01736 363715 or email bryony.gillard@newlynartgallery.co.uk.

Entry from The Exchange’s car park on Sunday evening will be between 7.30 and 8pm only. The gates will close and there will be no late entry, but you may leave when you wish. There is no level access to the basement. Disabled visitors should contact the gallery prior to this event.
